Superstar Finance Blogger Week 2: NYSSCPA.org
State CPA societies have been extremely slow to embrace blogging as a way to generate more traffic and interest in their websites. The New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) is one of the few exceptions to that rule.
The blog was started in December 2008. Over that year, the focus has been news items of interest to members of the organization. Local events and an occasional opinion thrown in with a news item have added a little bit of flavor to the blog.
New articles are posted at least daily, and often there are two or three articles posted per day. That activity level is great! Comments are allowed on the blog, although there aren’t many commenters who are participating at this point.
I’d love to see more thought-provoking material on the blog to get readers more engaged, but I can’t complain much about what NYSSCPA has done. They’ve got tons of material, multiple authors, and a more active blog than any other state CPA society out there. Kudos to NYSSCPA.
And in case you’re wondering about the other state CPA societies that are blogging… I found blogs for Arizona, Missouri, Colorado and Ohio. (If you’re aware of other blogs by state CPA societies, please leave a note in the comments below!) And what about Twitter? Many more of the societies are represented there. Now we just have to get them interested in blogging!
Why should the state societies have active and engaging blogs? Typically the CPA society sites have been static websites with few updates. They regularly update their training (CPE) listings and often post material from their magazines, but that’s about it. A blog is a great way to keep members coming back to the site. The continuous new content will draw in members, will hopefully spark conversations, and will give the society extra opportunities to market to their members.
Each week, BloggingSuits highlights one Superstar Finance Blogger that we’ve found while surfing the internet. These blogs are interesting, frequently updated (2 to 3 times per week), and full of useful materials for clients, practitioners, or both. Bonus points are awarded if the blog allows comments and has a healthy dialogue with readers. If you know an accounting or finance blogger who deserves to be recognized in our Superstar series, drop us a line!
